Ball Club Lake is a great fishing spot for sport fishing with its Largemouth Bass being very popular. But catching this fish is no small task, especially for beginners.

So, I’ve made a quick list of the tricks pros use to catch Largemouth Bass at Ball Club Lake:

1) Red Signals A Wounded Fish

When you are in shallow cover (like clumps of grass, stumps, or wood), use a red-headed spinner bait. You can use a crankbait with hooks painted red as well. The red color signals an injured bait, meaning that the fish will take a bite at it.

2) Annoy The Bass Into Biting Your Lure

Bass are known to be bad-tempered fish. The best way to get a Bass to bite onto your lure is to annoy them. I found tapping them repeatedly will eventually get them to take a bite out of the lure. But patience is the key here and it can take a while before the Bass is upset enough.

3) Go For Seasonal Bait

You should try switching your bait depending on the season. This is because the Largemouth Bass like different types of bait during different seasons. Early in the year, Bass prefer Crawfish, so pick peach-colored lures. During summer and fall, Bass fish prefer eating Shad, so pick silver or chrome-colored lures.

4) Try Fishing In The Shallows During Spring

Largemouth Bass go into mating during the spring season. At the time, they like to stay in spawning beds in shallow areas. So, if you’re looking to fish for some Bass during the spring, focus on the shallower regions of the lake. This is also when they are easiest to catch because they are also hungrier along with being annoyed.

5) Look at Your Livewell Water

Take a look at your Livewell tank after you’ve caught your first Bass of the day. The reason is that Bass fish is well-known for spitting up their food when placed in the Livewell tank. By taking a look at what they were feeding on, you can select the similarly colored lure. You can do this for the whole day or so.

6) Fish before the storm

When fishing, you want to be able to enjoy the soft breeze and calm waters. However, if you are looking to snag a Largemouth Bass, you should consider fishing before a storm. As the storm approaches, the ambient pressure increases, making the Bass more active and likely to bite your lure. So, if you find out that it’s perfect weather out there, chances of catching a Bass go down.

7) Learn To Skip Your Bait

Skipping your bait is similar to doing a swing check-in baseball. Just cast your line and stop halfway through the swing. This will force the bait to hit and skip across the water surface before reaching your target. The advantage of skipping your bait is that it lets you get under docks and other structures.

8) Fish Downwind

Bass are known to swim with the current. So, casting your line against the wind can result in the fish reaching your bait before your boat. The added advantage of this is that the water slapping your hull gets carried away from your fishing spot.

9) Save Shredded Worms

While fishing, your plastic worms are bound to get torn up. But be sure to save them and not throw them away. This is because Bass love to ambush wounded prey, which the torn-up worms look like. The trick is most effective when fishing in shallow waters.

10) Keep Your Hooks Sharp

In our Top 10 Fishing Tips And Tricks For Beginners article, we have talked about keeping your hooks sharp. When fishing, be sure that your hooks are always sharp because a sharpened hook can easily penetrate the fish. You can also use new hooks in case your hooks are too blunt.

Fishing is an exciting as well as a calming sport many enjoy. But whether you are fishing in freshwater or saltwater lakes, you need fishing skills to succeed. But what do you do if you are a beginner who wants to fish?

Well, I’ve noted down the top 10 fishing tips and tricks for beginners.

1) Be Armed With Knowledge

Just because you have little experience doesn’t mean you need to have zero fishing knowledge. Read online guides and familiarize yourself with the type of species of fish you want to be fishing. You should also find the best fishing method for your chosen lake or river. You reading this article is a great example of doing your pre-fishing research.

2) Pick The Right Lure For Deadly Results

Decide the type, shape, and size of your lure based on your prey. If you are fishing for Anchovies, a thin and small spoon is going to be most effective. When you pick up the lure, be sure to read the packaging about the intended fish. You can also ask the store staff or check online to find a suitable lure.

3) Let The Lure Blend In With The Water’s Color

Speaking of lures, be sure to match the color of the lure to the water’s color. It is recommended that picking the color that best blends in with the water is most effective. For green water, chartreuse or lime is preferred. In crystal clear waters, go for pearl or white. On the other hand, if you are finishing in tannic-stained water, root-beer color is the one to buy. Also, be sure to switch up the lure colors every once in a while. This is especially true if you aren’t able to catch anything.

4) Set Your Reel’s Drag Using A Hand Scale

The drag of your reel is what allows the fish to take the line instead of pulling it. If you want to do it like a pro, I recommend you get a hand scale. Set the scale to one-third of the line’s rated breaking strength. Alternatively, you can simply tug on the line until it just feels right. But this may require some experience and time to master.

5) Get The Right-Sized Gear

Many beginners pick one-size-fits-all fishing gear. This is fine if you are focused on saving money. However, if you want to see results in terms of fishing quality fish, this is not the way to go. The problem is that these gears don’t excel at any one job. Instead, get the right gear for your intended target. Fishing for largemouth bass will require a different sized rod and reel setup. Similarly, Black Crappie won’t be interested in the heavy reel and would rather go for an ultralight micro-jig.

6) Keep An Eye On The Tides And Currents

When it comes to saltwater fishing, be sure to consider the currents and tides of your fishing location. The tides will impact your fishing, depending on your location. This subject is something that can be a little complex. However, to find out the best tides and currents for fishing, just ask a local. These locals are sure to know the best spots and timings to fish.

7) Ensure That Your Lures Are Swimming Properly When Trolling

Trolling is when you are motoring your boat forward while your tow lures trail behind. In case you want to try this, make sure that your lures are swimming in a lifelike manner. If they look like live bait, you are more likely to hook yourself a fish. Let the lure swim beside your boat to check the right speed. Going too fast can make them look spastic while going too slow can make them look lethargic.

8) Only Use New Or Sharpened Hooks

If your hooks are sharp, you are more likely to catch your prey. But if they are dull, you are going to have a few hit-and-misses. So, it’s always a better idea to sharpen your old hooks or use new ones. This is something you have to check every time you head fishing. Checking your hooks is a simple but often forgotten tip for beginners who are finishing up.

9) Pick The Perfect Fishing Line

There are a lot of brands and types of fishing lines out there. If you don’t know what you need, be sure to talk to someone who knows fishing and fishing lines. Getting the right fishing line can improve your fishing experience and make it more fun activity. According to my experience, monofilament lines can stretch and have less sensitivity. These are perfect for fish that nibble on the baits. Alternatively, braided lines have greater sensitivity as well as a powerful hook-setting. This makes these braided lines perfect for use with lures.

10) Fish At Dawn And Dusk

If you are looking to get the best results when fishing, fish at dawn and dusk. This is because fish prefer the cooler waters that are present at these times. And when fishing during the day, look for shaded areas and cloud cover for your fishing spots.
